As a homeowner, at least your first time around, you don’t realize all the maintenance involved in owning a home. And while some things might seem obvious, others might not. In addition, there are maintenance costs. That is why it is really important to keep track of dates. You need to know how old your features are or when the last time something was updated. This especially applies to your windows. They aren’t just for curb appeal either. Windows contribute a lot more to the comfortability in your home than most realize. So, how do you know when window replacement is necessary? Here are some top signs that you need to consider new windows.
Top Reasons to Replace Your Windows
Constant Condensation
This often is more obvious in the summer and winter months. When the warm, moist air meets with the cold surface of the glass (either from winter outside or A/C inside) it makes condensation. What you are really looking for is if this is a consistent issue. It also matters where on the glass it is showing. If it is on the outside of your home, this typically means your windows are working the right way. If it is on the inside of the home, it indicates high humidity in the home, which is not ideal. Consider having your windows checked by a professional. If it is between the glass planes – you need to replace your windows for sure.
Damage to the Window
While this seems obvious, many times we want to try to repair things before we replace them. Even if working correctly, they can develop more problems over time. This could lead to drafts, condensation, swelling, etc. If it is minor, such as weatherstripping or hardware, they can be repaired. Just make sure they are fixed soon and correctly. However, when it comes to the gram, sash, or more structural issues, it’s best to replace than to repair. Also, look for less obvious damage, like decaying frames or leaky windows. This is especially important in wooden windows as they are more susceptible to damage.
High Utility Bills
If you see an increase in your monthly BGE bill, it might be time to take a look at your windows. While there might not be condensation or obvious damage, there might be a draft you don’t realize. One telltale sign is if the temperature by the window is substantially different than the rest of the house. Also, you can take a candle or incense and move it slowly around the corners of the window.
